Why is it important to plan ahead for Waitomo Caves Village?

Waitomo Caves Village is going to experience some growth. Council believes that it is very important to manage this growth so that the look, feel and shape of the village is carefully planned and any new development is appropriate. The District Plan is the vehicle for managing growth and for place making and place shaping. This is all about what we want the village to look and feel like; what is the identity of the area? what changes do we need to make to improve our wider environment? and what do we need to manage and protect for the future?

Council would like to work with the community to build on the Tere Waitomo Structure Plan that was undertaken in 2014. We think that we should be looking at strengthening connectivity, character and allowing for development in a managed way. This means that the District Plan might provide for better access in some areas, look at managing parking or providing for more opportunities to establish a businesses or tourism activities. We also need to think about how we manage things like the design and location of new buildings and activities.  As part of this we feel we should consider the role of Hangatiki as a gateway to the Village.
