Parties

The Waitomo District Youth Council reflects leadership, social responsibility and positive action for youth within the District.

Collaborative partnerships/relationships are those that encourage and foster shared participation and joint decision-making.

Parties participating in the Youth Council include, but are not limited to:

  • Waitomo Mayors Taskforce for Jobs Rangatahi Mentor
  • Waitomo District Council
  • Waitomo District High Schools and Training Agencies
  • Key Community Stakeholders
  • State Sector Youth Services Manager

Aims and Objectives

The agreed aims and objectives of the Waitomo District Youth Council are:

  • To engage the youth of our district
  • To create a communication channel between youth and decision makers within our community
  • To assist in the development of community awareness within our youth
  • To advocate for youth issues to improve the quality of life for young people within our community
  • To support and mentor youth leaders, creating confident leaders to guide future generations
  • To encourage active youth participation in the community
  • To deliver positive outcomes for youth
  • To deliver a range of activities and projects to enhance well-being within the community
  • To support the Te Kuiti Action Plan (State Sector Trials)

Recruitment

Recruitment of Youth Council members will take place in October/November of each year, as required.

Council members will be recruited via a formal nomination process. This process will involve completing a nomination/application form and participating in a training/team building day.

A call for nominations will be advertised via a public notice in the Waitomo News, on the Youth Council web page and promotion at schools and training agencies.

Meetings

Facilitated by the Mayor, with support from the elected members of the Waitomo District Council, each year the Youth Council will:

  • commence with an induction/planning meeting in January
  • conduct subsequent formal evening meetings on a monthly basis

Tasks

Members of the Waitomo District Youth Council will agree their annual work plan and key projects in collaboration with the Mayor with support from the State Sector Youth Services Manager in January of each year.
