Mayor's Column for June 2017

Thursday, 08 June 2017

Welcome to this month’s column.

In my last month’s column I talked of my role at LGNZ representing Rural Councils, and the concerns we had raised with central government around policing, and specifically rural policing. So it was pleasing to see the government has listened, and the Waikato has received the largest increase in numbers for NZ. NZ Police has asked for community leaders to help attract potential new officers, so if you are interested and want to know more, contact Te Kuiti police, or myself at WDC. I am certainly enjoying the role representing WDC and rural councils at the LGNZ Board.

A big congratulations to the amazing team at Mokau museum for their victory in the national awards. It has been great to work with such an enthusiastic group of passionate volunteers, who have created a “must visit” attraction for Mokau. Well done to you all, your victory is testament to your collegial effort over the past couple of years.

A very big day is looming with the upcoming unveiling of the bronze statue of Sir Colin Meads, and the opening of the Meads brothers’ exhibition, on Monday 19th June. For a short period of time, NZ and the world will be focused on Te Kuiti, and I have been very heartened with the fantastic local support and excitement that is building as the date gets closer. A huge thank you to the “Legendary Te Kuiti” team who have owned and driven this project. I want to emphasise to all the readers of this paper that this is not a council driven project, but very much a community driven project, and they are going to deliver a fantastic day on the 19th, and an enduring legacy to Sir Colin, as well as a major attraction for visitors to our district, and wider region. My involvement in this as Mayor, has very much been with a “Legendary Te Kuiti” hat on. On the 19th, we are expecting a significant crowd, with many ex All Blacks present from Colin and Stan’s vintage, and also from Colin’s time as All Black manager, so do come along and join in the day as well.

A big thank you to everyone who has helped so far, both from a fundraising and a logistical focus. We are getting closer to our fundraising target, and it was great last week to sign up Gallagher’s as our major sponsor for the project.

I want to make a special congratulations to the editor of this newspaper on her recent wedding held last month.  Congratulations Sue and Duncan, and I hope you had a fantastic day! I wish you well for your future together!
