Safe and accessible roads

WDC maintains 1,014 kilometres of roads across the Waitomo district (excluding State Highways).

Our road network provides an important connection to our predominantly rural district and serves a key economic function for primary producers in the agriculture and mining industries.

Our strategy is to maintain roads to a level that keeps them safe and available for use.

Council receives funding assistance subsidy from the NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) for approved work categories under the Roading activity.

The Transport Agency Board has endorsed the indicative investment of $28 million for WDC’s roading maintenance, in its’ Land Transport Programme 2015-18.

Of this funding, $2.6 million is provided as part of the NZTA funding assistance rate (FAR) of 61%. The funds will be mainly allocated to the area of minor storm damage - work that is required to clear and re-open a road after a slip or storm event.

WDC are pleased with the indicative level of funding.

During the 2013/14 financial year, WDC’s roading capital expenditure was $423,000 more than budgeted for ($240,000) due to unexpected weather events and land subsidence that impacted on the road network.
