Update on roading projects

Friday, 10 April 2015

WDC maintains more than 1000km of roads, 48km of footpaths, 986 street lights, 164 bridges and 8,138 culverts in the Waitomo district.

Our strategy is to maintain roads to a level that keeps them safe and available for use.

The following information is intended to keep you informed about the current roading projects taking place across the district.

Mangarino Road, Te Kuiti - Retaining wall

Work on Mangarino Road started on the 30th March 2015 and will continue for the next month, with an estimated completion date of 30th April 2015.

This work is required to stabilise the road; and will involve the construction of a retaining wall, to make the road more resilient to slips and subsidence.

Tawa Street, Te Kuiti - Retaining wall

WDC's contractor Inframax Construction Limited have been working on the extension of the existing retaining wall on Tawa Street, since January 2015.

The work involved creating a working bench below road level, pile driving steel beams into the ground, tying back into the slope by means of anchors, timber lagging in between steel beams and finally road reinstatement.

This project is expected to be completed by 30 April 2015.

Annual re-seals programme

WDC undertakes a re-seals programme every year, across the district. The current programme is coming to an end shortly.

When confirming its roading programme, WDC identifies which roads in the Waitomo district need to be sealed and then prioritises the work by order of necessity.
