Water Conservation

12 Feb 2013, 2:38 PM

It’s important to realise that water is not an unlimited resource. Residential water use including garden watering, puts extra pressure on Council’s Water Supply systems during summer.

Water conservation and small changes made in terms of how we use water in the home will make a big difference. The following quick tips provide some ideas on how we can use water responsibly so there will be plenty of water available for all.

Quick Tips for Outdoors

  • Use a good mulch. This can prevent up to 70% of evaporation loss.
  • Don’t allow children to play with the hose. This can waste over 1000 litres of water every hour.
  • Water the roots of plants, not the leaves.
  • Use a timer with your sprinkler. A forgotten sprinkler wastes more than 1000 litres of water per hour.
  • A swimming pool cover can cut evaporation by as much as 90%, reducing the need for regular top-ups.
  • Chlorinating pool water will keep it cleaner for longer and reduce the need and frequency of refilling.

Small leaks lead to big water losses very quickly! To report a water leak outside your property please phone 0800 932 4357.
